Canvassing: Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam founder Vijaykant campaigning for K.P.Thangavel, the candidate for the Pollachi parliamentary constituency, at Aathupalam in Coimbatore on Tuesday.

Coimbatore: Disappointed farmers and vigilant women should vote for change in the ensuing elections to the Lok Sabha, said Vijaykant, founder of the Desiya Murpokku Dravidar Kazhagam (DMDK), on Tuesday.

He was campaigning for his party’s nominee for the Pollachi Lok Sabha constituency, K.P. Thangavel. He addressed roadside meetings at Madathukulam, Udumalpet, Mukkonam, Pollachi Kottur Sungam, Anaimalai, Pollachi and Kinathukkadavu. Going by the profile of the constituency, the DMDK leader harped only on agrarian issues such as long pending irrigation schemes and problems of the farming community.

He accused the successive rulers of Tamil Nadu of failing to resolve inter-State water disputes such as Mullaiperiyar, Cauvery, Palar and charged the political parties with lack of will and commitment to nationalise the rivers. Construction of dams and linking of rivers would have prevented wastage of water.

With Valparai Assembly segment being part of the Pollachi Lok Sabha constituency, Mr.Vijaykant said that the State and Central Governments had failed to ensure reasonable price for tea.

Terming the agricultural loan waiver as an eye wash, Mr.Vijaykant said that genuine farmers had paid their loans and the waiver had benefited only those identified by the bankers and politicians.

He said it would be the regional parties that would decide who should be the Prime Minister and asked the voters to give an opportunity for his party to prove its worth.

Manithaneya Makkal Katchi (MMK), the newly floated political outfit of Tamil Nadu Muslim Munnetra Kazhakam and a member of 'Social Democratic Front,' would support the left parties, where the party or front is not contesting for the May 13 Lok Sabha polls in Tamil Nadu.

As such MMK has decided to contest four seats, while other members of the front Puthiya Tamizhakam three seats and Indian National League in a few seats, MMK Pollachi constituency candidate, E Umar told reporters in Coimbatore on Friday.

The front would discuss and decide the strategy for other constituencies, where its and Left candidates were not contesting, he said.

The front would strive to rectify the prevailing anomalies in the OBC list both at Central and State level and also fight for implementation of reports of Sachar committee and Ranganath Mishra Commission on reservation, he said.

Asked why TMMK, which always supported DMK or AIADMK, decided to form a new front this time, Umar said DMK had earmarked only one seat for MMK, which was "very less" considering the over 10 per cent of Muslim population.

MMK wanted to fight in more number of seats and that too on it own symbol, he said adding the party has not approached AIADMK for alliance.

Pollachi- an agrarian belt

Pollachi: The Pollachi Lok Sabha seat, primarily an agrarian belt, is going to polls on May 13. The constituency relies on Parambikulam – Aliyar Project (PAP) for its agricultural needs and coir industry is a next major employment generator.

The delimitation exercise carried out by the Election Commission has turned the reserved constituency into a general constituency this time.

The delimitation has brought in a lot of changes in the constitution of the constituency as well. The Dharapuram Assembly segment (which was earlier in Erode district) is no longer part of Pollachi Lok Sabha seat. The constituency now has six Assembly segments namely Thondamuthur (which lies largely in Coimbatore city and its peripheral areas), Kinathukkadavu, Pollachi, Valparai (reserved), Udumalpet and Madathukulam. The last two Assembly segments form part of the newly formed Tirupur district.

The electorate in five Assembly segments largely comprise Gounder community while Udumalpet accounts for a sizeable population of Naickers. There are 1,330 polling stations.

The tribal hamlets in 958 sq km Anaimalai Tiger Reserve and Valparai town known for lush green tea plantations with have a sizeable tribal population will have polling stations in the hilly terrain. Reasonable price for agricultural produce including copra, enhancing the benefits in terms of the quantum of water for the farming community by ensuring implementation of Anamlaiaru, Nallaru and Idamalaiaru schemes in PAP and man-animal conflicts are likely to be the major local poll issues this time.

Since, 1951, the constituency has been claimed by Indian National Congress thrice, Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam thrice, once by the Tamil Maanila Congress, All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam five times and Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam in the last two elections i.e., 1999 and 2004.
