Coimbatore: Disappointed farmers and vigilant women should vote for change in the ensuing elections to the Lok Sabha, said Vijaykant, founder of the Desiya Murpokku Dravidar Kazhagam (DMDK), on Tuesday.

He was campaigning for his party’s nominee for the Pollachi Lok Sabha constituency, K.P. Thangavel. He addressed roadside meetings at Madathukulam, Udumalpet, Mukkonam, Pollachi Kottur Sungam, Anaimalai, Pollachi and Kinathukkadavu. Going by the profile of the constituency, the DMDK leader harped only on agrarian issues such as long pending irrigation schemes and problems of the farming community.

He accused the successive rulers of Tamil Nadu of failing to resolve inter-State water disputes such as Mullaiperiyar, Cauvery, Palar and charged the political parties with lack of will and commitment to nationalise the rivers. Construction of dams and linking of rivers would have prevented wastage of water.

With Valparai Assembly segment being part of the Pollachi Lok Sabha constituency, Mr.Vijaykant said that the State and Central Governments had failed to ensure reasonable price for tea.

Terming the agricultural loan waiver as an eye wash, Mr.Vijaykant said that genuine farmers had paid their loans and the waiver had benefited only those identified by the bankers and politicians.

He said it would be the regional parties that would decide who should be the Prime Minister and asked the voters to give an opportunity for his party to prove its worth.
